Practicality: What Needs to be Considered for Wind Systems
Permits, Zoning, and Utilities
• Determine what is allowed by local authorities.
• Work with your local government to acquire relevant
permits.
• Work with your local utility to allow your system to
become grid-tied.
• Contact SunWind Power Systems to help guide and
support your interaction with local authorities.
Site Assessment
1. Determine if your site as at least a wind speed of 9 mph.
• Use US wind maps. Also available for Indiana is a 70 Meter and 100 Meter and wind map.
Note: It has been estimated that Indiana has at least 40,000 Megawatts of wind energy potential.
Note: local wind speeds are highly dependent on local topography which may not correlate with wind map data.
• Use weather info. generated by local weather
stations and airports.
• Check trees on your property for indication of
strong wind.
• Purchase an anemometer to measure wind speed
on your property (Sold by SunWind Power Systems).
• Contact SunWind Power Systems for a site assessment.
2. Determine proper site of wind turbine on your property.
• The turbine should be at least 20 feet above any
obstacles such as trees and buildings in a 250
foot radius.
3. Determine proper tower height.
• The taller the tower the more energy the system
will output.
• The taller the tower, the higher the cost of the
system.
• Use the chart to determine proper height.
• Contact SunWind Power Systems for assistance.
